MacBook Air Battery Replacement

A fast-dying battery is one of the more frustrating issues you can run into with your MacBook Air. Unfortunately, your laptop won’t always hold a charge like the day you bought it. However, if your device can’t make it through a day of work or class without needing a charge, it’s probably time for an upgrade. Keep reading to learn if you should seek a MacBook Air battery replacement!

Can I Replace a MacBook Air Battery Myself?

Unlike the MacBook or MacBook Pro battery (which features a Unibody build), Air batteries are integrated within the device. This means that you can’t simply retract and replace the battery as you would with other devices. That doesn’t mean a DIY repair isn’t possible – but it is more challenging. Plus, if you aren’t familiar with the process, you’re more likely to run into issues. MacBook Air systems are fragile, and if you take a wrong step, you could face even greater damage. We recommend seeking the help of a trained technician to avoid causing any further harm to the device.

How Much Does a MacBook Air Battery Replacement Cost?

You have several options available to you to power up your battery life. Many MacBook users opt for the Apple store directly, but there are more affordable options!

Official Apple Store Cost

Apple offers MacBook users a one-year warranty on their purchase. If eligible, MacBook users can receive a free replacement for a defective battery. Often, users aren’t covered because they fall out of the time frame included in the warranty. Apple’s authorized service providers can provide a replacement. On average, an out-of-warranty MacBook Air battery replacement from Apple costs $129. Many Apple users also opt into the AppleCare+ program, which can help you save on battery replacement costs. However, there are some stipulations to this program, such as limited damage claims and coverage for only two years.

DIY Repair Cost

Amazon, eBay, and other online retailers offer new battery parts and replacement tools for those brave enough to attempt a DIY repair! These vary in cost, but you can find a total replacement kit anywhere between $40-$60. When searching for the best MacBook Air replacement battery kit, make sure you’re doing thorough research into the seller. Shoddy tools and replacement parts can cause damage to your device. It’s tempting to pick the least expensive option, but remember you get what you pay for! Failure to seek proper parts is often why cheap repairs tend to cost more in the long run.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Performing a MacBook Air Battery Replacement

Have you decided to attempt a DIY battery replacement? CPR Cell Phone Repair is here to help with a step-by-step guide to the repair process! Before you begin, make sure you have the right tools and parts for your specific model. You can identify the exact MacBook you own by finding its serial number here.

Once you have your replacement kit ready, it’s time to begin! Check out the steps listed below to start your MacBook Air battery replacement.

Steps:

  1. Power off your MacBook Air before beginning. Then, flip the device over so it is lying upside down. Be sure to lay the device flat on a soft surface to avoid any nicks or scratches!
  2. Grab your screwdriver and start to remove the ten small screws that outline the laptop’s back panel. Set the screws aside in a place they won’t be lost or damaged.
  3. Using your fingers, pry the display off from the lower case. Pull upwards without being too forceful.
  4. Once the lower case is removed from the panel, set it to the side in a safe area.
  5. Although you should have powered off your device, you can also disconnect the old battery to ensure the laptop won’t turn on. Attached to the battery connector is a clear plastic pull tab. You’ll want to pull this towards the front edge of the device. Warning: Do not pull upwards, as this could cause damage to the connector socket.
  6. The battery is locked into the upper case by five screws. Grab your screwdriver again to remove them. Set these aside from the back panel screws.
  7. Then, the battery should wedge out of place fairly quickly. Grab the battery on both sides nearest the logic board and carefully pull upwards. Do not squeeze or touch the four inner panels.
  8. Place in your new battery! To reassemble, follow these steps in reverse order.

If you purchased a new MacBook Air battery, you’ll need to calibrate it. This will keep your laptop’s battery in good condition and avoid needing a replacement for as long as possible. To calibrate, let the laptop charge entirely for up to two hours, then unplug and use it as normal until the battery dies. Let your MacBook Air remain off for at least five hours, and then plug it in and charge to full capacity.
